Neosho is a very involved community and lends a helping hand to those in need. Throughout our community, hunger has been an outstanding issue and several churches and organizations have risen to the challenge of meeting needs of those around. The Food Basket Brigade was started in 1988. Since its beginning, the effort has collected and distributed more than 4 million pounds of food. (The Joplin Globe). During the month before they deliver the food, several school organizations go out around town and pick up all the food from people who have it set out, usually by their mailboxes, and then they deliver it to The Newton County Armory. Volunteer groups usually consist of 20 people. Representatives of other churches and businesses from around the area volunteer their time to work at the kitchen. Others sponsor the meal, b ut can t spend the time working. For me, the reason why it s important to be part of the chamber is to just show that we are part of the Neosho community, Desiree Bridges said. We support what s going on here and it s a great way for people to know who we are. The purpose of the kitchen is to reach hungry people in the community. They can be any kind of hungry, including spiritually, physically and emotionally. Arvest of Joplin Missouri has started a â€Å"1 Million Meals† campaign to help the local area meet the rising demand of hunger. Arvest Bank in Southwest Missouri has partnered with Ozarks Food Harvest, Monett Community Kitchen, Newton County Food Basket Brigade Inc., Carthage Bright Futures and Lockwood Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry for the duration of the initiative. The Realm of African-American Literature Free Essays

In the realm of African-American literature, poet and writer Langston Hughes is considered one of the primary proponents that gave birth and development to the genre of Harlem Renaissance. This genre, which enjoyed popularity and support in the late 1920s until mid-1930s, was a cultural movement that depicted the life of â€Å"new Negros,† second-generation black Americans and direct descendants of African slaves in America. Harlem Renaissance was known for its incorporation of music, particularly jazz and the blues, in its everyday mirroring of African-American life through literature. Among Hughes major works of literature, the short story â€Å"The Blues I’m Playing† depict the dynamics that both white and black Americans experienced during the early 20th century. In this period, there was still evident division and discrimination between white and black Americans, with the black Americans gradually emerging as a major force in American society through their unique culture. â€Å"Blues† effectively illustrated the dynamics among Americans, white and black alike, as they struggled to assert the superiority of their respective race, culture, as well as gender. It is then this paper’s main thrust to discuss and analyze â€Å"Blues† in the context of three prevalent themes illustrated in the story: friction between white and black Americans through conflicting views about each group/sector’s race, culture, and viewpoints about gender roles. More specifically, the analysis involves a character analysis of Oceola Jones and Mrs Dora Ellsworth, a black American and white American, respectively. The character analysis centers on the presence or absence of change in the life of Oceola as she delved herself deeper into white American culture, and how, despite Mrs Ellsworth’s efforts to â€Å"acuulturate† her in white American society, Oceola’s roots and inherent ‘black Americanness’ prevailed. In the end, Oceola ended up being more triumphant, cultivated, and artistic than her patron Mrs Ellsworth. In illustrating the changes that occurred to Oceola during her process of acculturation to the white American elitist society, it is vital to demonstrate these changes through the themes of conflict between her and Mrs Ellsworth in terms of their respective race, culture, and gender. Noticeable throughout the story was Oceola’s seemingly passive attitude towards Mrs Ellsworth pretentious belief that she was, indeed, one of the few people who truly recognize art in its purest form. In contrast to Oceola, Mrs Ellsworth, because of her wealthy stature, took an active role in pursuing and creating what she called â€Å"pure art† through the proteges she had recruited through the years. The first theme of racial conflict emerged when Mrs Ellsworth expressed her traditional and prejudiced views about Oceola and black Americans in general. Though Mrs Ellsworth was congenial towards Oceola, her persistence to cling to society’s prejudice against black Americans was immediately demonstrated through her desire to educate Oceola on the principles of pure art, avoiding, the best she can, to acknowledge the fact that she was a black American. Her attitude was reiterated once again in her insistence to acknowledge the genius of one of her Jew proteges, even though she held prejudiced views against Jews. Racial conflict emerges with Mrs Ellsworth apparent showing of her discrimination and prejudice against non-white peoples. Even the very act of recruiting talented young people and finance their education to music and the arts was her way of creating a distinction between her and her young, poor yet talented artists. By financing the education of these talented artists, she directly controls the kind of education they will receive, thereby controlling also the kind of art that they will produce. It is through art, then, that Mrs Ellsworth â€Å"oppress† her proteges like Oceola: by controlling the art that they produce, she holds the power to suppress the protege’s desire to pursue his/her art simply because Mrs Ellsworth financed his/her education. Le Blanc’s analysis of the racial conflict extant between Oceola and Mrs Ellsworth echoed the dynamics of racial conflict between them. While Mrs Ellsworth actively expressed discrimination and prejudice against people who belong to a particular race other than white American, Oceola’s passive response towards her financer’s behavior showed that racial conflict was a sublime one. Indeed, as Le Blanc explicated in his study of both women characters in â€Å"Blues† (16). Of course, in her paternalism, Mrs Ellsworth does not quite view Oceola as her equal. Despite the young woman’s superior talent, Mrs Ellsworth persistently believes that Oceola lacks not just money, but certain cultural and emotional advantages. The older woman looks down upon her protege’s attachment to the physical and sensual world. This sensual world is manifested in jazz, Harlem, and Pete, and all these represent her connection to her black community and culture. Apart from the presence of racial conflict in â€Å"Blues,† a more apparent theme demonstrated was Oceola and Mrs Ellsworth’s conflicting views towards art per se. Oceola, exposed with Harlem culture, associated her music and art with the people she had been with, particularly her Harlem community and the church choir she used to teach prior to her being a protege under Mrs Ellsworth financial support. Mrs Ellsworth went through great lengths in order to assert the fact that the art she preferred, the art of elite people liker her, was truly American society’s superior culture. But Oceola remained passive to Mrs Ellsworth’s active advocacy to promote what she perceived as her â€Å"superior art.† Being the woman’s mere protege, she expressed kept her own thoughts and feelings about the issue of â€Å"art for art’s sake.† Interestingly, Oceola’s honest view of art made more sense than Mrs Ellsworth learned viewpoints about it. At one point, Hughes voiced out through the character of Oceola the real nature and function of art to human society: â€Å"Why did they or anybody argue so much about life or art? Oceola merely lived-and loved it†¦If you wanted to play the piano or paint pictures or write books, go ahead! But why talk so much about it?† This honest view of art in Oceola’s terms was the author’s way of expressing his disagreement to the dichotomy of superior culture and inferior culture. African-Americans, who gave birth to Harlem culture, as well as contributed significantly to the world of art through the music genres of jazz and the blues, created art based on their experiences as an African-American and with their community. Art for art’s sake was a credo not subsisted to in a collectivist culture like African-American’s; art was created as a result of the people’s interaction with each other, the product of harmonious unity and interconnectedness as peoples of a particular race, with specific traditions and heritage. In Mrs Ellsworth attempt to expose Oceola to Western (European) art in order to ‘forget’ her Harlem roots and influence, she only reiterated her perceived superiority. She was a woman who held herself in high-esteem because she believed that she was promoting a noble cause, preserving pure, untainted art-art that merely exists for itself, an art that is autonomous to its creator and devoid of any other human element or influence in it. Mrs Ellsworth’s perception of art was a â€Å"separation of art from life† (Bone, 23). In her failure to acknowledge art as the work of an individual and as devoid of any meaning nor influence, Mrs Ellsworth was indirectly destroying the concept of culture altogether, in the same way that she tried to change Oceola by ‘destroying’ her strong Harlem roots, influence, and culture. Hughes’ villainous portrayal of Mrs Ellsworth showed that an attempt to bridge â€Å"the gap between the two races by means of art† (1062). Unfortunately, Mrs Ellsworth’s insistence to hold on to her prejudiced beliefs and perceived superiority became hindrances that led to the eventual deterioration of her relationship with Oceola. The issue of degradation was also reflected in the conflict that Mrs Ellsworth wanted to create as she took in Oceola as her protege (1060). It is inevitable that Mrs Ellsworth should compare herself against Oceola, who, despite the lack of opportunities and privileges in life, was able to create beautiful music without the proper training or education. Mrs Ellsworth tried to assert her superiority by indirectly assuming the persona of Oceola, whom she believed she owns and can control. That is, by supporting Oceola, she indirectly fills in the ‘gaps’ in her life. Oceola remained unrestrained and free to express herself through her music; she was also able to produce beautiful art through music. These are the qualities that Mrs Ellsworth sought to have, and believed she had, by financially supporting Oceola. Thus, gender conflict emerged with the â€Å"contrasting meaning and significance and music to each woman† (Brent, 11). As Brent discussed in her analysis of Mrs Ellsworth and Oceola, the former’s art was an â€Å"abstraction,† ‘rising above the banalities of everyday life.’ Oceola’s music, however, â€Å"music is a living, breathing practice which is fully integrated with her personal, everyday experiences.† These distinctions between the two women reflect the kind of society and reality they lived in: Mrs Ellsworth lived not for anyone nor herself, but on art alone. Oceola, meanwhile, preferred to liver her life not only with Pete, but with her Harlem community as well. Characterizing white and black American differences and conflict through the two women characters provided the in-depth look that Hughes wanted to show to his readers. It is through the characters of Oceola and Mrs Ellsworth that readers were able to witness the persistence and pervasiveness of prejudice and discrimination, regardless of one’s gender or socio-economic status in life. Logistic requirements of IAJs The company deals with recycling of the papers, exports of live cattles and imports chemical.The companys logistics requirement should be flexible in terms of customer requirements; total control and dependability of the logistic chain, good coordination of all parties involved in import and export of the goods or products and ensure to provide possible conditions to the animals.The company should provide the clients the facility of land transportation of livestock or any product by road by hiring a dedicated truck fleet. The company should even take care of the cattle yards; the cattle transport vehicles, and the transport routes. The cattle yard represent places for accommodating cattles and cattle transport vehicles and routes represent various transport modes, such as trucks and roads, cattle trains and rail lines, as well as livestock ships and designated sea routes. All these three activities require good coordination, transportation and a distribution warehouse. Imports chemical from Indonesia and sells it in Australia (Elsevier, n.d.).The company uses two logistics information systems and they are LIS controls and LIS2 control to run the business. LIS controls The company manages these activities through 300 ERP software to control business operations across all divisions and countries. A detailed capability list for the logistic segment of this ERP system follows (Bondless. 2014). Inventory Control This Control module helps to keeps track of stock levels and processes inventory receipts, shipments, returns and adjustments. Inventory Control includes extensive on screen inquiry and reporting functions to give the detailed, current information crucial for effective inventory management. Inventory controls involve the below mentioned steps. Costing Maintaining and reporting on six different costs per location, including standard, most recent, average, last unit, and two optional user-defined costs. And it even decides when to record the transaction cost and Allocate additional costs to transferred inventory items by quantity, cost, and weight, or manually specify the cost per item (Maheshwari, 2014). Pricing: The aim of pricing is to maintain separate price list for different customers as per their types, payment methods, regions or currencies. It even sets up pricing based on cost plus a percentage or amount, by weight, quantity or unit of measure and by customer type and identify if always to use the lowest of contract price, discounted base price, or sale price for specific customers. The other inventory control is Entering Transactions, Posting, Performing Inquiries and Reporting (BIFA. n.d.). Order Entry Order Entry integrates fully with Inventory Control and Accounts Receivable, so that the company always knows the inventory levels and the status of their customer accounts. The order entry involves Maintaining Customers, Entering and Managing Invoices, Posting, Performing Inquiries and reporting.We can see the application of these steps in the companies day to day activities where the company buys all kind of papers for recycling and industrial waste paper or in the form of recycling in baled, skidded or rolled. These include Old Corrugated Containers/Cardboard, Old Newsprint, Sorted Office Waste, White Ledger, Colored Ledger, Computer Print-Out, Single Stream waste and Co-mingled and Other Paper Recycling Materials. The company exports approximately 50000 tons of waste paper which the company sells to Indonesias largest producer of newsprint (Ghiani, Laporte, Musmanno, 2013). The companys major suppliers are AMCOR in Western Australia, SKM Recycling in Victoria and Trans Pacific In dustries Australia-wide. The Suppliers with the help of large containers transport the waste papers and the company keeps changing the shipping companies to chasing spot rates for the consignments in attempt to reduce the companys shipping costs to a minimum (Witkowski, n.d.).The company deals with import of newsprint produced by PT Aspex which is Indonesias largest producer of newsprint. It imports approximately 50000 tons of environment friendly newsprint. The company even imports chemicals from Indonesia and Thailand for plywood, newsprint, and for the agricultural industry that are sold in Australia. They import Phenol which is used in resins, plywood adhesive and lube oil additives, Melamine which is used in resins and plywood adhesive. The companys major place for emptying the shipping is Fremantle and Melbourne where shipping companies are contracted on the spot. With the help of LIS controls the company is able to meet its entire requirement and the customers requirement (Lo gistics Degree. n.d.). LIS 2 - Live export control The third activity the company is involved in is exporting live cattle to Indonesia. The company manages to run its daily business with the help of LIS 2 - Live export control where the system automatically uploads the consignment information to the database for live exports to other countries such as Egypt, Indonesia, China and Russia. It even helps in tracing the animals from Australia to another country and efficiently processes each individual animal crush-side then exports the test data to the lab and sent the results for instant updates on animal export eligibility. Today company acquires 331,800 hectares of land for cattle station. The cattle station has a carrying capacity of 15,800 head of cattle which consists of Brahman-Drought master cross- breed which has a proven a track record of growing rapidly and being able to adapt to tropical climatic conditions (CSIRO. n.d.). The company exports about 20,000 head of cattle every year to Indonesia. The process of moving the cattle to the holding yard which is located in the outskirts of Darwin and after the carrier arrives the cattle are moved to the port, where they are transported to the vessel. Even in this process the trucking company is contracted on the spot. Effectiveness of Recommendation It is very important to take measures to make sure that the recommendation made is being followed strictly as the profit of the company depends on it. As a Logistic manager I need to check the impact of the recommendation and the outcome of the program at a certain level and correct it when required. Achieving profitable growth in the future will require logistic service providers to undertake a thorough repair of their traditional business designs. The company needs to develop industry oriented and innovative solutions and to think and act in terms of networks, and making core functions like tender management more professional. Islamic Chronicles The Islamic chroniclers have a different viewpoint. They portray Sonni Ali as a capricious and cruel leader. In the 16th century chronicle of Abd ar Rahmen as-Sadi, a historian based in Timbuktu, Sonni Ali is described as an impious and unscrupulous tyrant. Sonni Ali is recorded as having massacred hundreds while plundering the city of Timbuktu. This routing included killing or driving out the Tuareg and Sanhaja clerics who had acted as civil servants, teachers, and as preachers at the Sankore mosque. More Conquest Regardless of the precise interpretation of history, it is certain that Sonni Ali learned his military lessons well. Never again was he left at the mercy of someone elses fleet. He built up a river-based navy of more than 400 boats and used them to good effect in his next conquest, the trading city of Jenne (now Djennà ©). The city was placed under siege, with the fleet blockading the port. Although it took seven years for the siege to work, the city fell to Sonni Ali in 1473. The Songhai Empire now incorporated three of the greatest trading cities on the Niger: Gao, Timbuktu, and Jenne. All three had once been part of the Mali Empire. Trade Rivers formed the major trading routes within West Africa at that time.  The Songhai Empire now had effective control over the lucrative Niger River trade of gold, kola, grain, and slaves.  The cities were also part of the important trans-Saharan trade route system which brought south caravans of salt and copper, as well as goods from the Mediterranean coast. By 1476, Sonni Ali controlled the inland delta region of the Niger to the west of Timbuktu and the lakes region to the south. Regular patrols by his navy kept the trade routes open and tribute-paying kingdoms peaceful. This is an extremely fertile region of West Africa, and it became a major producer of grain under his rule. Slavery A 17th-century chronicle tells the tale of Sonni Alis slave-based farms. When he died, 12 tribes of slaves were bequeathed to his son, at least three of which had been obtained when Sonni Ali initially conquered parts of the old Mali empire. Under the Mali Empire, slaves were individually required to cultivate a measure of land and provide grain for the king. Sonni Ali changed this system and grouped the slaves into villages, each required to fulfill a common quota, with any surplus to be used by the village. Under Sonni Alis rule children born in such villages automatically became slaves. They were expected to work for the village or to be transported to the trans-Saharan markets. Sonni Ali the Warrior and Ruler Sonni Ali was brought up as part of an exclusive ruling class, a warrior horseman. The region was the best for breeding horses in Africa south of the Sahara. As such he commanded an elite cavalry, with which he was able to pacify the nomadic Tuareg to the north. With cavalry and  navy, he repulsed several attacks by the Mossi to the south, including one major attack which reached all the way to the Walata region northwest of Timbuktu. He also defeated the Fulani of the Dendi region, which was then assimilated into the Empire. Under Sonni Ali, the Songhai Empire was divided up into territories, which he placed under the rule of trusted lieutenants from his army. When a detergent is used, its usually one designed for lab glassware, such as Liquinox  or Alconox. These detergents are preferable to any dishwashing detergent that might be used on dishes at home. Usually, detergent and tap water are neither required nor desirable. You can rinse the glassware with the proper solvent, then finish up with a couple of rinses with distilled water, followed by final rinses with deionized water. Washing Out Common Chemicals Water Soluble Solutions  (e.g., sodium chloride or sucrose solutions): Rinse 3-4 times with deionized water, then put the glassware away.Water Insoluble Solutions  (e.g., solutions in hexane or chloroform): Rinse 2-3 times with ethanol or acetone, rinse 3-4 times with deionized water, then put the glassware away. If the solvent will be ether, you can rinse the glassware with ethanol or acetone to remove the water, then rinse with the final solution to remove the alcohol or acetone.
