Congrats, Farhan! I took 21A.453: Anthropology of the Middle East last fall with Professor Susan Slyomovics, who is just awesome. (I liked her so much that I took her class 21A.348: Photography and Truth the next semester.) Anyway, our 21A.453 class had only 3 students in it, and we met in the Anthropology Departments conference room for class twice a week. Professor Slyomovics gave us a group project one week, and back at home, I kept referring to Shirali 05 and Farhan 05 as my groupmates, and Sam would ask, Arent they your classmates? and I responded, Same thing. That was cool. Shirali 05 (non-pre-med biology major (yes, they exist. another example: Mollie 06)) once told me its bad to eat within 2 hours of going to bed, so late at night when everyone else would eat potato chips and brownies, I would cite her fact and refuse the food. For some reason, this really bothered Sam maybe he was offended that I wouldnt eat his delicious cake batter. Okay, so anyway, Sam thought he would be super cool. Wishful thinking? I thought so too. Sam: Shirali told Mitra she should wait 2 hours after she eats to go to bed. Farhan: Hmm? Sam: Yeah, isnt that total crap? I eat right before I go to bed, and its fine. Why should I wait 2 hours? Farhan: Actually, I would even wait 3. :: Sam bangs head against the wall :: HAHA. Okay, now to the serious part of this entry. Potential pre-meds, read this! One of the most common questions I receive about MIT is about its program for students who want to go to medical school. MIT has no official pre-med track, so you can major in anything at all and have access to MITs pre-med resources. Traditional majors for pre-med students are biology, brain and cognitive sciences, chemistry, and chemical engineering. (Im sure biological engineering will soon join this category.) However, at MIT, there is no special track you have to follow to go to medical school as long as you complete med school requirements (more on those below) you can apply for medical school. For example, an acquaintance of mine is majoring in architecture in and is planning on going to med school next year. The MIT Careers Office has a section on Premedical Advising. This includes information on a prehealth advisor, med school admissions, and statistics on 2004 pre-meds. This website is really helpful, and I strongly encourage you to go through it if you are considering a career in medicine. Also, there are some minors that may be of interest to you. Biomedical Engineering (BME) is becoming more and more popular every year, and Toxicology and Environmental Health (TEH) is an old favorite for the pre-med crowd. Please note that you shouldnt feel like you must complete a minor in order to go to medical school these links are just to provide a more comprehensive look at what MIT has to offer. Discussion During the experiment, it was observed that sunflower seed shoots, regardless of their orientation, will almost always grow towards the light. Likewise, the root of the seeds will almost always grow towards the ground. This trend is due to the auxins in the plant, hormones that promote growth. When a seed is placed sideways, unnaturally, the auxins in the plant stimulate growth in the shoot to still curve upward towards the light, and in the root to curve downward towards the ground. The accuracy of this experiment was sound. The equipment used was the same for all groups and was reasonably suitable to the experiment as it allowed easily observable results, for example the glass test tubes allowed us to watch our seeds grow each day. However, watering the plants was not undertaken every day, affecting the overall accuracy. Having a specific required amount of water to water the plants each day would have been beneficial to the accuracy of the experiment. The reliability of this experiment was poor. Most observations were not consistent. In many geotropism experiments, there were shoots that did not curve all the way down to the ground. This could have been due to the limited space they had between the glass of the test tube and the filter paper. The validity of this experiment was also poor. The constant variables were not very well controlled; the place in which the apparatus was set up changed, which meant different environmental conditions for the plants. The weather also changed every day, especially on Saturday when it was 41 degrees. This would have had an impact on the growth of the plants, and a burnt filter paper was observed, which could have been a result of the hot weather. The significant rise in temperature should have been predicted prior to the end of the school week so a more controlled environment could be created for the plants to have a consistent area to thrive in. To improve the accuracy and reliability of this experiment, a clearer and more specific method should be undertaken and a better set up of apparatus should be hought up to give the seeds more room to grow. However, the aim of investigating the effects of light and gravity on the growth of sunflower seeds was answered. This experiment is beneficial to society as it may assist gardeners, florists, other biologists etc in growing plants efficiently. Conclusion: Based on observations, our hypothesis of the shoot always being positively phototropic and the root being positively geotropic was supported, bringing us to the conclusion that light and gravity have a major impact on the growth of sunflower seeds no matter what the orientation. This is controlled by the auxins that respond to the light and gravity, promoting growth in the shoot of the seed to grow toward the light, and the root of the seed to grow toward the ground. Not to say that Reverend James Smith was not, but his degree of kindness and respect were present in a whole different level. They both wanted to convert the lost, all those in Umuofia that were not in the church. Mr. Brown made friends with the clan and trod softly on his faith, (pg.178) while Mr. Smith told them how things were in a harsh voice and tried to force his religion on the people of Umuofia. The impacts the two had on the people and the church were exact opposites. Mr. Brown was very firm in restraining his flock from the clan (pg. 178) and learned from talking to those within the group that a frontal attack on the clan would not succeed (pg.181). Because of this insight he gained great respect with many of the high officials. Once he was even presented with a carved elephant tusk, which was a sign of great dignity and rank (pg.179) by Akunna. With this earned admiration he was able to open not only a town store, but a hospital and a school as well. He pleaded for the clan to send their children and all others who wanted to, to attend his school. At first everyone was reluctant to explore this new option for education. Those that chose to attend Mr. Browns school would not only learn how to read and write, but they would also learn how to fight back against those that would come in and try to conquer them. With this insight and the kind gifts of singlets and towels (pg.181) from Mr. Brown, more people flooded into his school. Mr. Browns school not only taught them how to speak and read in another tongue, but from the very beginning religion and education went hand in hand (pg.182). Mr. Smith, on the other, hand was very harsh and saw things as black and white. And black was evil (pg.184). That unfortunate turn of phrase was indicative of ignorance and his attitude from the beginning toward the natives of Umuofia who were dark skinned. Under his control, or one might say lack of control, the over-zealous converts now flourished in full favor (pg. 185) causing the church and clan to meet collide to head for once and all when Enoch had killed an ancestral spirit (pg. 186). Once the egwugwu went to confront Mr. Smith for the killing of one of their members, Mr. Browns ignorance and rudeness were revealed even greater than before when he refused to leave the grounds when asked. Because of the reputation and the friendships that were built by Mr. Brown, Mr. Smith was treated with the same respect when confronted by the spirits. Unfortunately, Mr. Smith still would not go and respect the wishes of the spirits and leaders of Umuofia despite their kindness regarding the situation at hand. Although Mr. Smith stood his ground he could not save his church (pg. 191) and the hands of the egwugwu tore apart the hard work Mr. Brown put into the church in Umuofia before having to leave both physically and socially. When the church first came into town everyone was very hesitant and aloof to this new God and church. If is was not for Mr. Brown coming in first and creating the relationships the church would very doubtfully had had the chance to even build a building in the outskirts of town. If Mr. Smith has been the first to arrive at Umuofia it would have been very difficult to build any trust among the people. Because Mr. Smith danced a furious step (pg.185) among the people of Umuofia, the relationship would have undoubtedly been hard to create. It is unfortunate, though, that the people of Umuofia did not have a choice of which missionary, if any, they might have preferred to teach them the ways of the white man. Students create their own advisory committee with three instructors from different disciplines, one of which must be a tenured member of the Arts and Sciences faculty. With their advisory committee, students of interdisciplinary studies will develop their major. Major proposals must include a title, a description of why it needs to be interdisciplinary, what problems will be addressed through the program, and what methodology will be used to address them, as well as letters of support, a bibliography, and list of courses they plan to take. Avoid the HMRC backlash Avoid the HMRC backlash You may recall that six million people have through no fault of their own paid the wrong amount of tax over the last few years, thanks to a blunder at HM Revenue Customs (HMRC). The story dominated the column inches last month, in part because of the way HMRC so unceremoniously delivered this bombshell to its customers (in the form of a standard tax calculation letter) and in part because of the backlash that followed from taxpayers. Being customer-centred Arguably some of the controversy could have been avoided through a large dose of subtlety and a more customer-centred approach from HMRC. And if it had actually taken into account how its customers might receive the news (particularly if you were one of the 1.4 million poor souls who had underpaid). HMRC was never going to make friends in this situation, but equally it didnt have to make enemies. The tone of its letter was on the clinical side at best and unapologetic at worst. Heres an extract to give you a flavour: Dear taxpayer [Name] I have reviewed your income tax liability for the year shown above to see whether you have underpaid or overpaid tax for that year. My calculation is given on the enclosed sheet. The calculation result is given near the foot of that page. The See Notes column refers to the numbered notes in the guidance leaflet Understanding your tax calculation which I also enclose. A copy of this calculation has been sent to [Agent name]. Part of this underpayment is already being collected through your tax code during [year] and the rest will be collected during [yearyear] (Source: BBC News) Keeping letter writing customer-centred is always important, but probably never more so than when giving bad news. The last thing you want is to exacerbate the situation by not only delivering a blow, but by also sounding like a robot as you do so. To avoid this, try the SCRAP (Situation, Complication, Resolution, Action, Politeness) formula. Situation Begin by explaining the situation (or where they [your readers] are). By doing this, your readers will realise you understand and empathise with them. In the case of HMRC, this could have involved briefly summing up (and owning up to) mistakes in the PAYE system, and suggesting it was at least aware of the worry this might cause to its customers. As you may be aware, HMRC has recently found that some taxpayers have paid the wrong amount of tax through the PAYE system over the last two years. We understand that many people will now be concerned about how this may affect them. Complication Introduce the idea that theres a problem readers need to solve or a request they need to fulfil (why they cant stay there). Here, of course, this will be the money taxpayers owe (or are due). It would also be wise to reinforce this with an apology. Im very sorry to tell you that you have been undercharged by X for the year XX, as the enclosed calculation shows. Resolution State your resolution to the problem or request. Your readers may well be relieved that youre offering a ready-made way of fixing things. (In the case of HMRC, such a sense of relief would unfortunately elude those taxpayers suddenly finding themselves seriously out of pocket.) We are now in the process of collecting underpayments. For those who have underpaid by less than 2000, like you, we will do this by altering your tax code to reclaim the money in monthly instalments over the next X year[s]. We would also like to assure you that from now on, we will be using a new computer system that will minimise the risk of such a mistake happening again. Action Suggest what action the reader can or should take. In some cases, this will be what further action you, the writer, are going to take. Make sure that this follows on logically from the resolution. HMRC has been criticised for not being entirely open about taxpayers possible rights to appeal. If these were made clear at this point, it might avoid being bombarded with letters of appeal sent on the off-chance. You dont need to do anything at this point: your new tax code will be applied automatically. The additional tax taken each month will be X. If, however, you feel that you provided all the necessary information for us to tax you correctly, you may be entitled to appeal. Please see the enclosed leaflet for details on whether this applies to you and how to contact us. Politeness Finally, end with a polite sign-off. And, in this example, a second apology. I hope you understand why we need to take this corrective action. Once again, Im sorry for the effect that our mistake may have on your financial situation. Yours sincerely [name] Apologise like a human No-one likes to admit theyve made a mistake, but owning up and apologising when its justified will always have a better reception from your reader than trying to wriggle out of it. And, while I apologise is better than nothing, Im sorry is much better: it sounds more sincere and more personal. The language of we apologise for any inconvenience caused has been dubbed professionalese by Daniel H Pink, author of Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us. Pink advises avoiding the phrase entirely, because it makes the author seem like theyre distancing themselves from the mistake. We speak human at home and professionalese at work, he explains. And that might be hurting our businesses more than we realise. In childhood were often told to say were sorry and mean it. And it seems that remains the best advice at every level. In his book The Upside of Irrationality, Dan Ariely found that a simple Im sorry, uttered following a mistake, stopped the other person from getting annoyed and retaliating in some way. According to the data collected 70% of the respondents opted for the Big Bus tour where as only 30% of the people opted for the original tour. Were you given ample time given to you for sightseeing? According to the data collected people who opted for the Big Bus tour said that they were given time to see all the sights but some of the people were not satisfied with the time provided by the tour companies but this is based on their personal requirements. Was there any entertainment for your children during the tour? The original tour is the only bus tour company that provides entertainment for the kids. Families who opted for the big bus tour were really happy with all the facilities and the value added services provided by the company the only thing that they were not content with was that their kids were not given any special treatment. Whereas the families who opted for the original tour were really happy with the services specially with the kids club facility for their children, this made their tour more enjoyable. Was the guide able to answer your questions? The guides of both the tour companies were well informed and were able to tackle all the questions very easily. Did the tour match upto your expectation? Big bus tour was able to match upto the customers expectations as all the things that the company mentioned were provided to them. The most important thing that they were excited about was using their BONUS CARD facility. The original tour was also able to meet the expectation and the people with kids were the ones who were really happy and satisfied as their kids were able to enjoy the tour because of the KIDS CLUB facility provided by the original tour company. Customers, whether they opted for big bus or the original tours , they were certain that they will recommend the tour service to all their friends as they were extremely happy with the services provded to them. RECOMMENDATIONS On the basis of the data collected and the survey conducted I have reached the following conclusion: According to the information and my personal experience BIG BUS TOUR is the best and also most of the respondents that were interviewed were the ones who had gone for the same. Personally I would recommend both the companies to install toilets in the buses as it would make the trip more convenient for the customers. According to the suggestions given by the respondents , buses should install some moving platform with the help of which people with a wheel chair can make use of the open top facility provided , otherwise they have to sit at the lower level Original Tours should start a facility similar to the BONUS CARD which is provided by the Big Bus Tour , as it is one of the major differentiating point between them. If the Big Bus tour wants to attract couples with kids, they should start a KIDS CLUB facility or something on the same lines as it would increase their customer base, even though it is still very high. CONCLUSION With the help of the data collected through the questionnaire and the information gathered from the internet I can easily say that big bus tour, with all the hype around it and being started recently ie in May 2011 takes the lead in the hop-on hop-off bus tour providing companies. Original tour company, even though started about 5 decades back, has lost to the new kid on the block. In order for the original tour company to gain more market share and once again be on the top it has to start some aggressive marketing strategies, give more discounts, provide 48 hour tickets as done by its competitors. Big bus tour company, in order to maintain its lead in the market, should introduce some kids entertainment or start a tour specially for the younger generation which would attract more families, as the main motive of the family is that their kids should have a great time and at the end increase their knowledge about the city.

Hospice Care
Hospice-care or frequently known as ââ¬Ëpalliative careââ¬â¢ is the provision of symptomatic treatment to those who have reached a terminal stage of a disease. It can be provided in a hospital, clinic or even at home. During the second half of the twentieth century, several new technologies had been developed in the field of hospice care to help people with terminal illnesses to die without much suffering. Professor Patrick Wall was one of the main doctors who helped to improve the art and science of hospice care.The term ââ¬Ëtotal painââ¬â¢ was coined in the year 1964, and was mainly utilized to suggest not only physical suffering, but also mental distress, social problems and spiritual concerns. As a response to total pain, hospice care was developed to help the patientââ¬â¢s relief their physical, mental, spiritual and social sufferings. Medical professionals, nurses, social and religious workers, etc, were involved in the process. Initially, the medical and nursing fraternity did not know how to handle people suffering from terminal illness.To identify their needs many hospitals and organizations conducted surveys. A report published by a UK nursing research organization in 1952, demonstrated the needs of cancer patients who died in their homes. In 1960, the Gulbenkian Foundation conducted extensive research in about 300 homes meant for the dying and interviewed more than 600 doctors. It was found that such homes did not have enough money and staff to handle the number of patients suffering from terminal illnesses.In 1963, Hilton found that most of the sufferings of the elderly patients suffering from cancers and other terminal illness was not relieved (Saunders, 2001). Over the decades after the World War 2, a lot of research and development have occurred in the field of hospice and palliative care. Nowadays, hospice has included other aspects including spiritual and social welfare, along with holistic care. During the period between 1965 an d 2005, there have been significant developments in the field of palliative medicine such that it has emerged as a separate branch of medicine.Some of the aspects of hospice care that have been developed include: ââ¬â ? Providing holistic treatment that includes spiritual and social care ? Customized patient care including appropriate management of symptoms ? Several healthcare professionals working from several specializations towards helping the patient out improve the quality of life ? Use of effective medications in order to control pain ? The events in ââ¬Å"The Chrysanthemumsâ⬠take place in the Salinas Valley and focuses on Elisa Allen, her loneliness, and her attempt to communicate with others. In this story, Steinbeck uses various symbols to express the theme, which states that true communication must flow in both directions. The most important symbol in the story, the chrysanthemum, strongly expresses the theme as it represents the story as a whole. Additionally, the specific characteristics of the flower themselves symbolize different events in the story. Elisa, like the chrysanthemums, has strong and healthy characteristics. Additionally, Elisa and the chrysanthemums are the only things in the story that have common characteristics; therefore it is safe to say that the chrysanthemums symbolize Elisa. The petals of the chrysanthemums are symbolic as well. Steinbeck relates this symbol to major occurrences in his story. The chrysanthemums have been raised and nurtured by Elisa, stand tall and strong, and are ââ¬Å"10 inches wideâ⬠. The chrysanthemums are giving all they can and are the biggest they can be.
